Community Sector IR Workshops 2010: Another New Beginning
  Last updated : 29/04/2010

Almost every nonprofit community based organisation in Australia is affected by major changes to employment conditions which are occurring under the Fair Work Act. This workshop explains:

1     What has changed

  • Modern awards and the National Employment Standards commenced on 1 January 2010;
  • In all states except WA, employers previously in state systems transferred to the federal system on 1 January 2010;
  • New arrangements for agreement making; and
  • New processes for unfair dismissal and the new “adverse actions” provisions

2     What you need to do

  • Now
  • From July 2010
  • Next year

3     What has not changed

4     How the Equal Remuneration case for the community sector will affect your organisation.

These workshops are being held across Australia, presented by our team of experienced Industrial Relations Advisers.  Local issues will also be covered where relevant (for example, coverage issues in WA, funding issues regarding the Community Services state award in Qld).

Workshop Program

Morning session (Registration at 9.15 am, start 9.30 am, finish for lunch at 12.30 pm)

  • Overview of conditions under the Fair Work Act – NES, award modernisation and transitional arrangements
  • Options for enterprise bargaining
  • Unfair Dismissals and the new provisions regarding adverse actions
  • Recent cases in the Commission and Fair Work Australia which illustrate how some of the new provisions work in practice – such as individual flexibility arrangements and the small business fair dismissal code

Afternoon session (1.15 pm – 3.15 pm) – an optional workshop which examines some of the issues from the morning session in more depth

  • Award interpretation – practical examples such as changes to the hours of work provisions in the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award
  • Detailed examples of how the modern award transitional arrangements work for loadings and wages

Morning tea and lunch included for all participants.
